Introduction

Vision

The core vision of the NWCDI is to be the co-ordinating centre for the craft and hand-manufacturing sector in the North West Province. This vision includes providing targeted support to crafters and to organisations assisting and developing craft resources and capacity. The intention of this work is to create a sector that is vibrant, resourceful, self-sustaining and a net creator of employment.

The Institute’s Vision is: To define a unique Provincial craft identity and creative brand and to establish the craft sector in the North West Province as a viable Industry by supporting, directing and promoting it.

Mission

The mission of the NWCDI is to become the keystone in the North West craft sector by facilitating communication between all stakeholders, and by identifying, developing and maintaining sector capacity, skill and capability across all stakeholder and interest groups.

North West Craft Sector Profile

Challenges

The craft sector, in the North West in specific and South Africa in general, is beset by a number of threats and challenges.

  • South African products are often perceived as being of low quality, mostly from a manufacturing viewpoint.
  • SA craft producers have a reputation for slow/non-delivery, particularly with respect to exported products and international markets.
  • There is a general lack of access to finance and credit facilities
  • Raw materials are expensive
  • There is inadequate access to logistics and communications
  • There is a lack of access to markets, opportunities and buyers
  • The industry has poor or limited resources base and limited production capacity
  • There is a general lack of basic business skills.
